NIAGARA M0 HAWK POWER CORPORATION NINE MILE POINT - UNIT 2 DOCKET NO. 50-410 Final Report for a Problem Concerning Use of Nonblunt-nosed Stencils on ASME III Materials (55(e)-84-51 )
Description of the Problem Initially Niagara Mohawk determined that the use of non-approved tools for the application of permanent marking to ASME material had occurred.
As a result of inspections perfomed on ASME Class 1 piping and the break exclusion area (which includes some Class 2 piping), it was detemined that confomance with code requirements for marking has been achieved with one exception.
This exception consisted of certain characters stenciled into a Class 2 fitting located in the break exclusion area of the reactor core isolation cooling system.
Analysis of Safety Implications No calculation was perfomed to establish whether the presence of such markings in their specific location on this particular fitting would have violated design integrity; however, it is conservatively assumed that there would be a potential effect on the safety of operations of the plant had the condition remained uncorrected.
l Corrective Action The nonconforming stenciled characters will be removed by grinding.
After reinspection to assure minimum wall thickness and integrity, the stencil will be re-applied in accordance with Nonconfomance and Disposition Report
- 11667. The corrective action will be completed by August 1,1985.
