Gentlemen:

Subject:50-293/85-22

A routine, radiological safety inspection was conducted by Mr. R. L. Nimitz

of this office on August 19-23, 1985, at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station,

Plymouth, Massachusetts. The inspection findings were discussed with

Mr. A. L. Oxsen.

The inspection covered: status of previous findings, implementation of the

Radiological Improvement Program, unplanned releases, and radiological controls

for Fuel Pool work.

No violations were identified. The inspection findings indicate that the

Radiological Improvement Program is being satisfactorily implemented. The

findings also indicate that satisfactory corrective actions were taken for the

recent unplanned releases from the machine shop and sewage system. Review of

your radiological controls preparation and planning for upcoming fuel pool work

indicates that, at the time of this inspection, little preparation and planning

had been performed. Additional management attention to this matter appears

warranted.
