Smith letter to J. G. Keppler dated April 22, 1985.
Dear Mr. Keppler:
References (a) and (b) provided information concerning a potential deficiency reportable pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55(e) regarding Deficient Welds on certain ASME Section III Tanks and Heat Exchangers at our Braidwood Station.
The purpose of this letter is to provide an updated status of the corrective actions taken to resolve this issue.
This letter is considered to be an Interim Report.
STATUS OF CORRECTIVE ACTIONS Chicago Bridge & Iron (CB&I) has completed their inspections of the Recycle Hold-Up Tanks and Heat Exchangers (OAB01TA, OAB0lTB, and 0AB03Tl&2).
Under the scope of Non Conformance (NCR) 694, all welds not in accordance with drawing requirements were mapped and a resolution of " accept as-is" or
" repair" was provided by CB&I Engineering and is being reviewed by Commonwealth Edison Company.
Those welds identified with a resolution of "accrjt as-is" Those satisfy the drawing and ASME Code section III requirements.
welds identified with a resolution of " repair" have Deen or are being repaired.
Some welds have been identified for " repair" because they did not meet the drawing / code requirements.

V~ i remaining welds have been identified for " repair" because it is more prudent to repair than to do an engineering evaluation for these welds.
Commonwealth Edison Company Project Construction Department will utilize this information in their review of other CB&I Tanks to determine if similar welding deficiencies exist.
Commonwealth Edison Project Field Engineering and Sargent &
Lundy are continuing their joint efforts to define the complete scope of NCR 711.
The inspection activities for NCR 711 are on hold until the total scope of this effort is defined.
It is anticipated that an interim report will be submitted in October 1985 updating the status of corrective actions being taken.
Please address any questions that you or your staff may
.have concerning this matter to this office.
Very truly yours, hh<.s>11 A. D. Miosi Nuclear Licensing Administrator cc:
