..... JUL 151985 Docket Nos.: STN 50-455, STN 50-456 and STN 50-457 Mr. Dennis L. Farrar Director of Nuclear Licensing Commonwealth Edison Company Post Office Box 767 Chicago, Illinois 60690

Dear Mr. Farrar:

Subject:

Supplemental Request for Additional Information - Byron Unit 2 .

and Braidwood, Units 1 and 2 A site visit was conducted on May 21-23, 1985 at Braidwood Station, Units 1 and 2 in order to view the installation and arrangement of electrical equipment and cables. During this visit specific issues identified during the Braidwood Station Construction Appraisal Team (CAT) inspection were discussed. The CAT inspection revealed several points regarding physical separation, particularly between Class IE and non-Class IE cables. Commonwealth Edison Company's (CECO's) criteria established in the Byron /Braidwood Stations FSAR for separation between redundant Class IE raceways is consistent with R. G. 1.75. However, the criteria for separation of non-Class IE from Class IE cable raceways is established at the reduced distance of 12 inches vertical and 3 inches horizontal which deviates from the separation criteria of R. G. 1.75. Acceptability of CECO's lesser separation criteria between Class 1E and non-Class IE raceways, with bases and jdstification, were not addressed in the Byron /Braidwood Safety Evaluation Report (SER). This omission in the SER has resulted in differences in interpretation of  !

requirements by the NRC inspectors and CECO and the A/E.

Therefore, it is necessary to perform an evaluation of CECO's separation criteria of Class IE cables from non-Class IE cables in order to eliminate any discrepancies and misinterpretation of separation requirements in this area.

To facilitate this review, CECO must provide a technical analysis which includes bases and assumptions supporting the lesser separation criteria using the following guidelines:

Non-Class IE circuits shall be separated from associated circuits and Class IE l circuits by the minimum separation requirements specified in IEEE-384-1974 en-dorsed by R. G. 1.75. The effects of lesser separation between the non-Class IE circuits and Class IE circuits shall be analyzed to demonstrate that Class IE circuits are not degraded below an acceptable level. The technical analysis A

R 151985 Mr. Dennis L. Farrar for the lesser separation criteria, which are proposed and implemented, should be based on realistic assumptions and premises.

The above information needs have been discussed with CECO. Please provide your

response within 20 days of receipt of this letter. If any further clarification

! is needed, please contact Janice A. Stevens, Licensing Project Manager, at (301)

, 492-7144.
