-Mr. Harold R.-Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.- S. ; Nuclear - Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555
Subject:
Virgil C. Suumer Nuclear Station Docket No. 50/395 Operating License No. NPF-12 Generic Letter 83-28 Items 4.2.1 and 4.2.2
Dear Mr. Denton:
In a letter from the.NRC staff, dated August 2,1985, South Carolina Electric and-Gas Company (SCE&G) was requested to provide additional information to support the staff's review of Generic Letter 83-28," Required Actions Based on Generic Implications of Salem ATWS Events," Items 4.2.1 and 4.2.2.
This letter is being submitted in response to this requested information.
Current surveillance testing procedures at the Virgil-C. Summer Nuclear Station require checking the dropout. voltage for the utidervoltage coil. However, as requested by the NRC Staff in response to Item 4.2.1, the appropriate test procedure.will-be revised to specify that the undervoltage trip attachment (UVTA) will be replaced if-the dropout voltage is greater than 60% or less than 30% of rated UVTA coil voltage. In addition, trending of the UVTA dropout voltage.will be added to the appropriate procedure to comply with the.NRC' recommendations for Item 4.2.2.
Corrective and preventive maintenance, testing and trending of the Reactor. Trip Breakers. will continue in accordance with approved station procedures that are.
based on the reviewed, and approved Westinghous'e Maintenance Program Manual for
! DS-416 Reactor. Trip Circuit Breakers. This document, which is the breaker manuf acturer's recommended maintenance program for the breakers located at the Virgil.C. Summer Nuclear Station, is ' considered to be guidelines for SCE&G's-Reactor.. Trip Breaker maintenance program. - If subsequent industry experience E
indicates that revisions to the program are warranted, these revisions will be-reviewed by.SCE&G to' determine if they should be incorporated into the maintenance procedures at the plant. These revisions will be incorporated only Lif SCE&G determines that-the change is necessary.and does not decrease the
. effectiveness of the 'overall Reactor Trip Breaker program.
. ou should.have any further questions,.please advise.
Ifl y Yours very truly,
/
