SUBJECT:

TMI-1 EQUIPMENT SUBJECT TO A HARSH RADIOLOGICAL ENVIRONMENT As you requested, the Reactor Systems Branch has performed an audit evaluation of the equipment list submitted by GPU dated August 23, 1984.

We reviewed the equipment which provides for emergency core cooling, reactor protection and accident monitoring.

The development of the list was discussed in detail with GPU in a meeting of August 29, 1984.

GPU originally tabulated all equipment which would be utilized in mitigating SB LOCA/ loss of feedwater from the plant procedures.

The lists included both safety and non-safety grade equipment. The radiological qualification of each component was then evaluated.

Equipment which was not radiologically qualified was evaluated to determine if it did not perform a critical function and could, therefort, be deleted.

By this method the list may be larger than required since equipment which does not perform a critical function would be retained if it has been qualified.

We identified three components which should be added to the list.

These com-ponents were (1) the pressure switches for the high pressure injection auxil-iary oil pumps (2) the high pressure injection auxiliary oil pumps and (3) the high pressure injection flow indication.

In addition, the decay heat removal /

LPI flow indication should be qualified for normal operation radiation doses.

The LPI flow indication is utilized to balance LPI flow in the event of a core flood tank line break.

We were unable to determine the requirements for makeup tank level indication (used to determine if HPI pump recirculation should be isolated on low level).

The associated procedures were under revision.

GPU responded to our audit review in a letter dated November 9, 1984.

The above equipment will be added to the list of equipment which will be radio-logically qualified including the makeup tank level transmitter.

We conclude that the radiological qualification equipment list is complete within the above stated scope of the audit review.
