Dear Sir:
Subject:
Docket No. 50-206 Upgrade of the Emergency Notification System (ENS)
San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1
References:
A)
June 19, 1981 letter from R. H. Engelken, USNRC Region V, to L. T. Papay, SCE, ENS Upgrade B) January 22, 1982 letter from K. P. Baskin, SCE, to R. H. Engelken, USNRC Region V, ENS Upgrade Reference A provided the bases for the ENS upgrade and requested information relating to implementation of these modifications.
Reference B provided responses to these items.
Reference B indicated our intention to install new cable and conduit, qualified per IEEE 383 for the cableway to the control room.
Further, we indicated that this conduit would be seismically qualified and the cable would be safety-related.
The purpose of this letter is to identify to the NRC our intent to install "Alsheath" cable (but no conduit). Alsheath cable utilizes an aluminum sheath on the cable to provide mechanical protection of the wires within, thus satisfying the function of a conduit. Alsheath cable is qualified per IME 383 but is not safety-related. The purpose of our original commitment to install seismic conduit and safety-related cabling for the cableway to the control room was to ensure that there would be no deleterious effects on adjacent safety-related circuits and equipment.
Upon further review of the configuration of the cable facilities, in conjunction with the nonsafety-related classification of the ENS, it is concluded that installation
-of Alsheath cable is sufficient to meet this objective.
