BELLEFONTE NUCLEAR PLANT UNIT 1 - DEFICIENCIES IN THE UNIT 1 COMPONENT COOLING PUMP MOTORS - BLRD-438/85 FIRST INTERIM REPORT This subject deficiency was initially reported to NRC-OIE Inspector Art Johnson on August 12, 1985 in accordance with~10 CFR 50.55(e) as NCR 4448. Enclosed is our first interim report. We expect to submit our next report on or about March 7, 1986. We consider 10 CFR Part 21 applicable to this deficiency.

FIRST INTERIM REPORT 4

Description of Deficiency Various deficiencies have been identified with all three of the unit 1 component cooling water (KC) pump motors (1KC-EMOT-001-A, -002-B, -003-A)

furnished by Baboock and Wilcox (B&W) (Lynchburg, Virginia).~ These deficiencies include but are not limited to:

(1) missing or loose bolts, (2) rusted dowel pins, (3) loose or rusted nuts, and (4) metal filings or debris found in the bearing housings.

4 The apparent causes of the deficiencies are an inadequate protection of the equipment from the construction environment or inadequate design, adjustment, assembly, and cleaning by the manufacturer.

Interim Progress TVA has contacted B&W to provide input regarding necessary corrective. action, determination of the root cause, and action required to prevent recurrence.

In addition, TVA is reviewing circumstances involving the construction environment associated with this equipment for needed corrective actions as required. TVA will provide the next report on this condition on or about March 7,1986.
