December 12, 1996 Mr. Donald F. Schnell Senior Vice President - Nuclear Union Electric Company Post Office Box 149 St. Louis, Missouri 63166
SUBJECT:
GENERIC LETTER 96-06, " ASSURANCE OF EQUIPMENT OPERABILITY AND CONTAINMENT INTEGRITY DURING DESIGN-BASIS ACCIDENT CONDITIONS" (TAC N0. M96791)
Dear Mr. Schnell:
By letter dated October 30, 1996, Union Electric Company (UE) submitted its 30-day response to Generic Letter (GL) 96-06, " Assurance of Equipment Operability and Containment Integrity During Design-Basis Accident Conditions," for the Callaway Plant, Unit 1.
In the response, UE indicated that it had reservations as to whether the expected results can be achieved within the 120-day period. The letter further states that in the event UE is unable to complete the work prior to January 28, 1997, UE will submit as much of the requested information as available at the time along with a schedule for completion.
In this event, UE will also identify any alternative actions intended to verify the operability of affected systems and components.
It is the NRC's expectation that UE will complete the actions requested in the GL and submit a report to the NRC by January 28, 1997.
If you determine that a delay in the schedule will result in the reauested actions not being complete by January 28, 1997, we request that you notify us of the delay, in writing, as soon as the delay is realized.
The notification shall include any alternative course of action that is proposed to be taken, including the basis for establishing the acceptability of the proposed alternative course of action and the basis for continued operability of affected systems and components as applicable.
If you have any questions, please contact me at (301) 415-1362.
Sincerely, Original Signed By Kristine M. Thomas, Project Manager Project Directorate IV-2 Division of Reactor Projects - III/IV Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation 10 Docket No. 50-483-DISTRIBUTION:
