NOTES-------------------

l 1. DG loadings may include gradual loading as recommended by the manufacturer.

2. Momentary transients outside the load range do not invalidate this test.
3. This Surveillance shall be conducted on only one DG at a time.
4. This SR shall be preceded by, and immediately follow, without shutdown, l a successful performance of SR 3.8.1.2.

Verify each DG operates for a 60 minutes spec' ed  !

This Surveillance demonstrates that the DGs are capable of synchronizing and accepting greater than or equal to the  !

equivalent of the maximum expected accident loads. A 1 minimum run time of 60 minutes is required to stabilize '

l 4 engine temperatures, while minimizing the time that the DG 4 is connected to the offsite source. l Although no power factor requirements are established by this SR, the DG is normally operated at a power factor l between 0.8 lagging and 1.0. The 0.8 value is the design i rating of the machine, while 1.0 is an operational j limitation to ensure circulating currents are minimized. i The load band is provided to avoid routine overloading of the DG. Routine overloading may result in more frequent teardown inspections in accordance with vendor recommendations in order to maintain DG OPERABILITY. )

1 The7, n :131 day Frequency for this Surveillance 44as.

T d h ? " 1-1).is consistent with the industry guidelines for assessment of diesel generator performance (Ref. 14). I'

% an/15' Note 1 modifies this Surveillance to indicate that diesel ,

engine runs for this Surveillance may include gradual l loading, as recommended by the manufacturer, so that mechanical stress and wear on the diesel engine are minimized.

Note 2 modifies this Surveillance by stating that momentary transients because of changing bus loads do not invalidate this test.

[ Diesel Genefator Test ScheduM (continued) The test schedule (T e 3.8.1-1) i ements the ind ry .

gu elines for asses nt of diesel nerator performa e '

ef. 14). The pu ose of this te schedule is to ovide '

timely test data o establish a nfidence level a ociated ,

with the. goal maintain DG r iability at > 0. per test.  !

\

According the industry idelines (Ref. 1 , each DG unit  :

should b tested at leas once every 31 da . Whenever a has e rienced 4 or e valid failure n the last 25 v id tests, the ximum time betw n tests is red ed to 7 ys. Four fai res in 25 valid sts is a failur rate 0.16, or the reshold of acce able DG perfo nee, and

/hence may be early indicati of the degrada on of DG reliability When considere in the light o a long history of tests, owever. 4 fail s in the last valid tests may only be statistically robable distrib ion of random event . Increasing test Frequenc allows a more timel acc' ulation of ad tional test dat upon which to base ju ment of the liability of th G. The increased est F equency mus e maintained un 1 seven consecutiv failure ree tests ve been perfo .

The Fra ency for accele ted testing is 7 ys, but no less than hours. Tests nducted at interv s of less than 24 urs may.be cre ed for complianc with Required A ions. However for the purpose re-establishing the ormal 31-day equency, a succes ul test at an interv of less than 24 ours should be c sidered an invalid t and not count owards the seven nsecutive failure fr starts, and the onsecutive test nt is not reset. .

At t interval in e ss of 7 days (or 31 ays, as a ropriate) const utes a failure to SRs and resu s n the associat DG being declared i perable. It s not, however, onstitute a valid t or failure o the DG,

@ any con cutive test count i not reset.
