Reference:

Letter from Mr. K.L. Graesser to Mr. J.S. Abel dated December 13, 1984.

Mr. K.L. Graesser:

We have reviewed the stations comments on 4KV Motors, RCFC Motors, Cables and Junction Boxes regarding required maintenance.

We basically concur wth your comments, as outlined in the referenced letter, on the subject motors:

RHR Pump Motors, AFW Pump Motor, Charging Pump Motors, SI Pump Motors, Containment Spray Pump Motors and RCFC motors.

The frequency of electrical inspection and tests on the RHR and A.F.W.

Pump motors can be extended to once every other outage.

We also concur with your cable and penetration inspection and selection criteria.

Junction boxes and terminal blocks are critical element within Safety Related Circuits.

Nuclear Industry has been aware of technical concerns of aualification of terminal blocks for some time.

Sandia National Laboratories in January, 1981, issued a test report (NUREG/CR-1682) demonstrating significant effects of containment spray leakage currents.

We recommended that field walkdown of all junction boxes in harsh areas be performed and appropriate check sheets, based on the EPMS plan located in Tab E of the documentation package, be filled out.

The inspection of EQ junction boxes located in the harsh areas of the auxiliary building do not have to be completed before the end of this unit refueling outage.

These inspections can be completed between the outages.

We have concurred with the above position with your Mr. M.

Bailey verbally.

This letter serves to document our verbal approval.

A change of the M&S requirements in Tab E of the documentation packages will be initiated to reflect the new position.

If you should have any questions, please contact Ted Ulinski, extension 2842.
