,1 NIAGARA M0 HAWK POWER CORPORATION NINE MILE POINT - UNIT 2 DOCKET N0. 50-410 Final Report for a Problem Concerning Standby Diesel Generator Timing Chain Tightener Locknuts (55(e)-85-13)
Description of the Problem During testing and inspection activities for the Division I and II standby diesel generators (2EGS*EG1 and 2EGS*EG3) missing timing chain tightener locknuts (jamnuts) were discovered on both units. Both of the diesel
-generators were manufactured by Cooper Energy Services.
These locknuts are integral to the timing chain-tightener mounting bracket.
The missing locknuts were either overlooked by the vendor during engine fabrication or misplaced / overlooked during Nine Mile Point 2 site maintenance activities.
Analysis of Safety Implications
.These missing. locknuts could allow the timing chain mounting bracket to loosen from vibration after an extended period of time. The diesel operation could be adversely affected by loose timing chain tighteners, thus jeopardizing the availability of emergency onsite power. Therefore, the safety of operation of the power plant could have been adversely affected.
Corrective Action Replacement locknuts are ')eing procured from Cooper and will be installed by September 30, 1985.- Defici-y Reports MO 1243, M0 1244, and M0 1245 have been initiated to document condition.
In the meantime,-in order to continue testing activities aporary locknats have been installed in the Cooper diesel generators.
