Dear Mr. Gates:

SUBJFCT:

FORT CALHOUN STA110N UNil 1 - IN1ERIM EVALUATION [MERGENCY DIESEL GENERA 10R MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE OPERATING LIMITS (TAC NO. M83989)

The NRC staff has reviewed your request not to change out the emergency diesel generator (LDG) coolant from ethylene glycol / water mixture to water during the summer months.

The request was submitted by you in a Nuclear Safety Evaluation dated July 2, 1992.

The results of the review are documented in the enclosed Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) Technical Evaluation Report (TER) SAIC-92/6903, " fort Calhoun Station Emergency Diesel Generator Maximum Temperature Operating Limits," dated September 28, 1992.

Based on its evaluation, the staff concurs with the evaluation tay SAIC that there is no need currently to change out the coolant unless the ambient air temperature exceeds 104'I, at which time EDG #1 would be declared inoperable.

Therefore, the licensee can operate the EDGs at fort Calhoun Station with ethylene glycol / water mixture as an engine coolant through the upcoming winter months until the summer of 1993.

At that time, performance tests will be conducted by you if the proper ambient air temperatures (2 95'f) ave reached for conducting a useful EDG performance test.

A final review of the licensee's findings will be necessary af ter the performance tests are conducted.

The issues that will be required to be addressed during the subsequent review are listed in the SAIC interim report 92/6903 enclosed.

Sincerely, ORIGINAL SIGNED BY:
