were found in the heat-effected'aeme of the penetraties welds have been repaired. The repairedJareaa have been magnifluned land no signs of _
additional cracking have been feend. -The interior of:the vessel has been magnifluxed and six==all cracka have been repaired.
The relatively cool ambient temperature during " alding caused hydrogma '
buildup and consequent shallow (1/32" to 3/32" deep) aracks. The weld 4*
areas should have been pre-and post-welded heat treated at 200'F. Tha '
' M Ip' heat treatment was done at 100*F.
Chicago Bridge and Iron duplicated the trouble, including the cracks, in their lab.
I requested that Northern States Power submit twenty copies of a report I-describing the cause of the cracks and the repairs made. Mr. McElroy agreed to supply the report in about one month.
