MONTICELLO NUCLEAR GENERATING PIANT Docket No. 50-263 License No. DPR-22 Liquid Co60 Source in Excess of License Limits A condition occurred at the Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant recently which we are reporting to your office for your information.
On Wednesday, June 6,1973, while performing a source inventory, it was deter-mined that the quantity of liquid Co60, being stored on site for the purpose of preparing standard sources, was in excess of the plant licensed limit.
The present ifmit for liquid Co60 as specified in the Provisional Operating License DPR-22 is 0.545 mei. The amount of liquid Co60 in the present inventory was determined to be approximately 3.4 mei.
Investigation showed that the source had not been ordered by the plant staff but was apparently inadvertently included by the source manufacturer as a part of an extensive source order for Monticello.
When the source arrived on site, j
it was picked up on the source inventory; however, it was not recognized at that time that it was in excess of license limits.
Action is being taken to modify the operating license to include the additional i
amount of liquid Co60 Also, the procedures for receiving radioactive sources l
will be changed so that the licensed limit won't be exceeded in the future.
