March 11, 1960 Mr. James P. O'Reilly, Director Serial No. 216 Office of Inspection and Enforcement P0/RMTtbav U. S. Nuclear Eegulatory Commission Docket No. 50-339 Region II
'101 Marietta Street, Suite 3100 Atlanta, Georgia 30303
Dear Mr. O'Reilly:
Pursuant to the provisions of 10 CTR 50.55 (e), the NRC Region II was notified on Februar%1,1980, that the Unit 2 service water radiation monitoring pumps for the recirculation spray heat exchangers (2-SV-P-5,6, 7 and 8) are not qualified for the..tegrated dose expected during a post-ulated accident. The low head safety injection pump discharge line lead-ing to the high head pumps, once realigned from the injection mode to the recirculation mode, could become a source of sufficient strength that the integrated dose to the sample pumps would exceed the 2500 RAD threshold exposure established for non-radiation qualified equipment. These pumps provide a slip stream sample of service water fluid as it leaves the re-circulation spray heat exchangers and supply it to monitors to detect radiation resulting from heat exchanger tube failure.
The pumps are used for monitoring only and do not perform an accident mitigation function.
To resolve the equipment environmental qualification problem, the use of shielding or a combination of shielding and relocation of the existing puwm and motor combination to limit the radiation dose is being investigated.
As an alternative solution, replacoment parts, e.g. pump seals and motor, or the complete pump and motor assembly with components constructed of materials suitable for the expected radiation dose is being considered.
This report is forwarded as required by 10 CFR 50.55 (e) and is an interim report. '!he final report will be submitted when investigation of the alter-natives is completed and the planned corrective action has been determined.
If further information on this matter is required, please contact this of fice.
Very truly yours, s
, \\g/MNh /
