The attached me,aorandum desciibes infornation presented in an abstract published in the Novcaber 13, 1979 Ainerican Geophysical Union Publication, EOS, Vol. No. 46.

The abstract suwarizes the work of R. B. Lesley, a student at the University of California at Santa Cruz. Mr. Lesley has documented a connection between the San Simeon fault zone and a splay of the Hosgri fault zone, and evidence of post-Wisconsinan displacement (less than 20,000 years old) on an of fshore extension of the San Simeon fault zone. A copy of the ::hstract is attached.

He further concluded that the d ta available at that tiir,e led us to conclude that the San Simeon and l'osgri were not directly linked. He have not had the opportunity to cvaluate t' ? new in fortation.

Ucuever, a possible c.annection at d.'pth of the !!asg i end San Simeon fault zones had been ass ed by Uie USGS in its c.nalysis of the Nes9ei fault, cnd was part of the !, asis for its iccu udation for the m>.ii en Musgri carth-quake.

The NRC staff accepted the USGS incou.andation regarding the size of the SSE (magnitude 7.5).

Additionally, post-Wisconsinan faulting had previously been docuanind by the applicant on en onshore splay of the San Simeon fault <cne.

Ua have teniects.d the V. S. Geological Survey with respect to this inion ation and they indicated that they were aware of this inforation end had scen the data, although they have not reviewed it in detail.

They indicated this ncw data does not change their conclu-sion regarding the irainurn earthquake that could occur on the Hosgri Tault zone.

Thcrofore, we sce no reason to modify the current staff position regarding the ",afe Shutdown rarthylake (SSE contained in the c.fety Eval ua tion R:. port (Npple. mot 4, May,1976).
