Yol. tio. 46, November 13, 1979 entitled "Continuity and Recency of flovement orl Offshore Extensions of the San Simeon Faul't 7one, Central California," by R.

B. I.esley, of the University of California, Santa Cruz.

The abstract presents the autflov's interpretation of seisriiic reflection pvofiling data taken in shallow vial.. r across southein extensions of the San Siriieon.<ault xorle.

Ilr. I.esley irltc<piets tl. <I;<ta to shoW that the San Siri.,"orl arll't ccn

I called Jim Devine of 1.he U.

S. Geological Survey (USGS),

who in turn contacted the USGS office in I'enlo Park, Calif.

hr.

Devine in<dicated that a marine <'eologist at I'<erllo park;ho had seen the data, believes tllat the records ai"e good and sees rio rr<ason to disagree with I.esley's interpre-tationn at

't.'he p<.serlt tii<le, fir. Devine also said that this nevi data does not change the USGS's conclusion i"egal ding the maximum earthquake on the Hosgri faul t zone because a

possible connection between tl<ese two faults at depth had been assumed in their analysis.

Regarding post-'Misconsinan offsets, the Applicant had earlier mapped post-Visconsinan offset viithin the San Simeon fault system onshore.

In its safety evaluation of the Diablo Canyon site, the HRC accepted the USGS's recom.nen<iation regarding the SSF., thevefore, we see no i.cason to alter our conclusion that the assumption of the occurrence of a 7.5 r;ag>>itude eavthq<<af;e on the Hosgvi f ult at its closest approach to the site is appropv <a
