Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

Duke Power Company and Westinghouse Electric Corporation have luated the inf o:r.ation contained in the generic report entitled "Wei aterial Documenthtdon of the Eleven Reactor Pressure Vessels Fabricated by RDM

  • for Ves tin:; house", compiled by the former D2 Rot terdamse Droogdok Maatschappij,N.V. (RDM) to satisfy the requirtments presented in IE Sulletin Nos. 78-12,78-12A, and 78-12B and have concluded that the veld material data and other required information pertinent to the Ca tawba 'Jnit I reactor vessel are included in RDM's report. This generic -

RDM report includes a certified statement by the vendor to provide further assurance that the subject report addresses all of the applicable materials used in the f abrication of the Catawba Unit I reactor vessel.

This report was submitted to the NRC on October 29, 1979, as evioenced by

tes tinghouse 's transnittal letter, a copy of which. is attached for your information.

j Tor the Catr.:ba Unit I vessel, RDM has no archive material since it does not normally maintain an inventory of excess material. Therefore, Westinghouse i has inventoried archive surveillance weldrent material which may be used for

Dear Mr. Reinmuth:

Enclosed please find ten (10) copies of the report " Weld Material Documentation of the Eleven Reactor Pressure Vessels Fabricated by RDM for Westinghouse" in response to IE Bulletin 78-12.

A complete records search was performed as required by the bulletin for all primary boundary ferritic weld:ents used in the manuf acture of all vessels fabricated by Rotterdam (RCM) for Westinghouse. As a result of this search, no atypical weld material was found. Further, RDM has certified, based on tests made by them on su;; plied materials, that all weld material used in Westinghouse vessels met the applicable acceptance criteria. The fact that information from all sub-suppliers as to reeasures taken with respect to material identification and control at the time of manufacturing is not available at this time does not detract frcm this conclusion.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call .
