Dear Mr. Gary:

SUBJECT:

C0ilFIRMATORY PIPIT:G ANALYSIS SY NRC CCNSULTANT FOR CDMANCPE PEAK STEAM ELECTRIC STATION Recently, the Mechanical Engineering Cranch (I'EB) has instituted a progra:r of performing an indepencent confirmatory piping analysis for each plant under-going operating license review. For Cceanche Peak, this analysis ..ill se cer-forraed by our contract personnel at the Energy Technology Engineering Center (ETEC). The purpose of this independent analysis will t e to ver' fy shat the subject piping system meets the applicable ASME Ccde stress cr;teria. ' e cu not intend to resclve differences t.et';een our calculatec stresses anc incse of ycur designer, unless unusually large ciscreparcies are founc cc urless Code criteria are not met.

Tnis program will allow MEB to verify on a saapling basis that your designer has correctly nodeled its piping, has correctly used its computer ccces, anc has adequately accounted for the piping's as-built condition.

We will require certain information in creer to prcceed with our analysis.

Upon receipt of this information, ETEC will evaluete it to deterr"e if acci-tional inforuation or clarification is required. Failowi ng tne i n * : el N :e',-

ue hope to schedule a site visit to acquaint the ETEC personnel c!itr the ;13nt and rare specifically the piping systen under review. At t h a t t h e c.e c a ', C i s-cuss the piping analysis with your design engineers and obtain any adcitional information required.

We have chosen for our Conanche Peak analysis the main steam line 'cr Un;; 1 fron Stean Generater No. 3 to the penetration cesignated 'l-3 (nain steam l'ine inside containnent, reference Figure 10.3 cf FSAR). You should cuamit t h ra.e copies of the following information:

Mr. R. J. Gary l. piping layout and isor:.etric drawings sufficient to rocel the syster.1

2. support drawings with support and hanger spring rates
3. the piping design specification
4. valve weights and CG's
5. appropriate response spectra
6. appropriate anchor point movements
7. any design changes notices not yet incorporated into the piping or support drawings (later DCN's should be forwarded as received) .

Two copies of the above infcrmation should be submitted to this acdress:

Attention: S. B. Burwell; and one copy should be sent to:

P,r . L. J. Auge, Manager Facility Design Engineering Energy Technology Engineering Center P. O. Box 1449 Canoga Park, California 91304 As our analysis proceeds, we will also recuest that you pro;;de certain an;lyti-cal results for comparative purposes, such as the ASD.E Code recuired Cesica Reports.
