Dear Mr. Keppler:
References (a) thru (e) provided information concerning a potential deficiency reportable pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55(e) regarding structural steel installation-inspection records at our Braidwood Station.
The purpose of this letter is to provide an updated status of the corrective actions taken to resolve this issue.
This letter is considered to be an Interim Report.
Status of Resolution All Accessible welded and bolted connections which had missing QC inspection records have been either QC inspected and accepted, or have been repaired and QC accepted.

s-4 t Sargent-& Lundy has completed their evaluation of a sample of 180 inspection reports on inaccessible welded and bolted connections.
Although various discrepancies were found as discussed in Reference (e), none were design significant (i.e.,
design margin remained within specified design limits and code allowable stresses).
The loads used in the evaluation were the Byron final attachment loads.
Due to the construction status at Braidwood,'the. final attachment loads are not available.
While performing the sample inspections, it was also noted that some shop welds on the blockwall columns had some discrepancies similar to those found for field welds.
Sargent &
undy has developed a sample inspection program to address the adequacy of blockwall column shop welds.
All blockwall columns were supplied by American Bridge, Mid City, or Ramco.
These inspections will be performed as part of the inspection and rework program for field work as identified in the Correctivo Action Section below.
Shop weld discrepancies for the sample will be evaluated by Sargent & Lundy for design significance.
Although shop welding was not part of the scope of the originally reported deficiency, the shop welds will be addressed as part of the action to close this 50.55(e).
There are 83 miscellaneous structural-beam connections embedded in concrete and/or masonry.
Of these nine connections do not require inspection or rework since the b,eam reaction can be transferred directly to the concrete wall in which they are embedded.
Thus, these connections were required only during construction.
The remainder of the beam connections will be included in the inspection and rework program.
Corrective Action As discussed in Reference (e), Commonwealth Edison Company has decided to repair or upgrade (when.necessary) and inspect all inaccessible field connections with inadequate records.
Inspections, rework, and/or modifications of the field installations without inspection records and examination of the shop. welds will be performed in accordance with Gust K. Newberg Procedure 57.
The procedure is currently being reviewed by Commonwealth Edison Company. lit is anticipated that all corrective actions will be completed by August 15, 1985.
This program is approximately 5% complete.
An interim report updating the status of issue resolution and corrective. actions will be submitted'by May 15, 1985.
