DPR-71 & DPR-62 ALTERNATIVE SHUTDOWN CAPABILITY ASSESSMENT REPORT AMENDMENT NO. 1

Dear Mr. Denton:

Carolina Power & Light Company (the Company) hereby submits twenty (20) copies of Amendment No. I to the Alternative Shutdown Capability Assessment (ASCA)

. Report for the Brunswick Steam Electric Plant Unit Nos. 1 and 2. The original ASCA Report was transmitted by letter dated April 24, 1984.

Amendment No. 1 of the ASCA Report (enclosed) includes the following changes:

1. A clarification in the technical summary concerning a periodic update for the ASCA Report.
2. The addition of detailed information for various sections and definitions.
3. The updating of figures to provide for a better understanding within the text.
4. The addition of a fuse modification and inclusion of additional data to the alternative shutdown method list.

) 5. The updating of normal and alternative shutdown equipment lists.

6. A clarification of the water curtain location added in the southwest corner of the Brunswick-1 reactor building, 20 foot elevation, and a clarification of the requirements for the area.
7. A clarification of the exemption request for Fire Area DG-8.
8. A clarification of the separation details between redundant trains and the location of cable tray fire stops used to support the Brunswick-1 reactor building 50 foot elevation exemption request.
9. The addition of a requirement to maintain portable hand lights in the area of the Remote Shutdown Panel as well as the Control Room.
10. The correction of typographical errors.

11un Company.will continue to apprise the NRC Staff of progress in achieving full compliance with 10 CFR 50, Appendix R by providing periodic updates to the ASCA Report. These updates are planned to be made on an as needed bases with the next submittal not expected until the end of 1985. It is, therefore, planned to continue meeting with the NRC Staff quarterly to review the progress and status of implementation .of Appendix R modifications described in the ASCA Report.
