+,o. .e D-NIAGARA M0 HAWK POWER CORPORATION NINE MILE POINT - UNIT 2 DOCKET NO. 50-410 Final Report for a Problem Concerning Cable Separation in Free Air (55(e)-84-48)

Description of the Problem Certain cable installations completed prior to August 1984 did not meet the separation criteria for cables in free air as delineated in the specification for cable installation NMP2-E061A.

Analysis of Safety' Implications A - detailed analysis of safety inplications, to determine the effect of the actual separation between cables on the safety of operation of the plant, was not performed because the corrective actions outlined below have been/will be taken. However, it can be concluded, _ that since the separation criteria was not met . for certain applications, a possibility existed that the safety of operation of the plant could have been adversely affected.

Corrective Actions

1. In August 1984, Electrical Installation Specification No. NMP2-E061 A was revised to clarify in detail the separation requirements for cables in Free Air.-
2. In August,1984, Stone & Webster Field Quality Control added an attribute to its inspection plan (Cable Pulling Installations - N20E061AFA025) for the separation requirements for cable in Free Air.
3. Cable installations in Free Air Inspected prior to September,1984, will be re-inspected by Field Quality Control and nonconformities identified during their re-inspection will be corrected. The corrective action is expected to be completed by December 31, 1985
