. b THE CATHOUCUNIVERSITY OFAMERKA WASHINGTON D.C. 20064 DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING 202 . o33-st70 August 29, 1984 Mr. Cecil 0. Thomas, Chief Standardization & Special Projects Branch Division of Licensing U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555

Dear Mr. Thomas:

In response to your letter of July 3,1984 (Docket No. 50-77), the CUA-AGN 201 reactor is currently in a shut-down mode (copy to NRC enclosed).

The fuel-bearing control rods have been removed from the reactor and secured in another location. Hence, there is no postulated sequence of events that can result in an emergency. In addition, we have no reactor operators licensed at the presene time.

If and when we request permission from the NRC to become operational, we will address the emergency plan needs at that time.

Sincerely yours, Edward D. Jor an Reactor Administrator EDJ/ rah l Enclosure cc: Dr. Wm. J. Kelnhofer, Chairman Mechanical Engineering Department 0
