The #1 fire diesel pump was out of service for greater than 7 days which-requires a special report per technical specification 3.12.B.2.

Gescription of Occurrence and Corrective Action:

On March 27, 1992, the #1 fire diesel pump was removed from service to replace.

'he pumo since it's oischarge pressure was marginally acceptable.

The pump was replaced and post maintenance testing was performed on April 7, 1992.

During testing it was noticed that the diesel engine was producing large.

quantities of black smoke.

On April 10, 1992, _ the diesel vendor advised that a valve seating problem was the cause and a replacement engine head was ordered.

The vendor began work on April 28, 1992 to replace the engine head.

This work is expected to be completed and a functional test performed to demonstrate operability the week of May 4, 1992.

During this period of inoperability, the #2 fire diesel ps.cp and the backup fire pump have been operhble.
