Notice of. Deviation July 124, 1984 Page #2 NOTICE OF DEVIATION NRC INSPECTION REPORT 84-12

'NRC. Inspection Report No. 50-395/84-12 addresses NRC inspection uctivities for the Virgil C.

Summer Nuclear Station May 1-31, 1984.

Item 84-12-02 of the report identifies a deviation from a commitment-to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

. Deviation'

Description:

Final Safety Analysis Report (FSAR) Section 12.1.4.2 states that the Area Radiation Monitors are' calibrated on a routine basis.

This constitutes a commitment to the NRC regarding routine calibration of the Area Radiation Monitors.

Contrary to this commitment, as of May 24, 1984, the Area Radiation Monitors had not been included in the Licensee's Preventive Maintenance Program for routine calibration; and as a consequence,-the following Area Radiation Monitor calibrations had expired:

MONITOR AREA SERVED RMG-2 Radiochemistry Lab Area RMG-3 Sampling Room Area RMG-12 Auxiliary Building Waste Holdup Tank Area Corrective Action Taken:

Area Radiation Monitors RMG-2, 3, and 12 have been included in the Licensee's Preventive Maintenance Program, and calibration of the units was completed June 15, 1984.

' Action Taken to Preclude Further Deviations:

' The Licensee has verified that all Area Radiation Monitors, as identified in the FSAR, Table 12.1-19, are included in the Licensee's Preventive Maintenance Program.

The Licensee is also verifying calibration of all Area Radiation Moi.itors as identified in the subject FSAR Table.

Any monitor identified as requiring calibration will be calibrated prior to startup following the present shutdown.
