Ms. E.G. Adensam, Chief Licensing Branch No. 4 Re: Catawba Nuclear Station Docket Nos. 50-413 and 50-414

Dear Mr. Denton:

In response to an August 9, 1984 telephone request by Melanie Miller of your

staff, attached is the Failure Analysis Associates report entitled

" Tors iograph Test Of Emergency Diesel Generator IA At Catawba Nuclear Power Station".

Please note that this test was made while the Catawba Nuclear Station IA diesel generator was operating with TDI style "AN" piston skir ts.

These piston skirts were replaced during the July 1984 inspection with style "AE" pis ton skirts.

This replacement will not affect the results of this test as the weight differences are insignificant.

Also, a summary of the 1A diesel engine operational load history (from July 17, 1984 letter to C.L. Ray, TDI Owners Group from G.W. Hallman) is described es percentages below.

The diesel had been run about 157.5 hours5.787037e-5 days
0.00139 hours
8.267196e-6 weeks
1.9025e-6 months
by various groups such as construction, startup, and TDI before this " operational load i

history" log was begun.

This 157 hours0.00182 days
0.0436 hours
2.595899e-4 weeks
5.97385e-5 months
is considered as No Load for these calculations.

Start No.
