l 1450: Maria Lane, Suite 210 l Walnut Creek, California 94596 l PROGRESS REPORT, MARCH 1984 TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE FOR INSPECTION OF DIABLO CANYON DESIGN VERIFICATION PROGRAM, FIN 88552 (UNIT 1) AND FIN A0753 (UNIT 2).
- 1. Project Description As a consequence of an Independent Des'ign Verification Program, many modifications and additions to the piping and electrical raceway support systems and building structural steel are being implemented ~ at
~ the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. The LLNL is assisting the NRC Region V office in assessing the adequacy of this work.

- 2. Progress - March 1984
]
Inspection of the Unit 2 polar crane modifications is nearly complei!e and is mentioned here because' both of the cranes have been entered as
~ single line items in the inspectio'n log. This is a consequence of the drawings not providing a suitable method of uniquely identifying the structural connections.
The unit 2 crane had four (4) box assemblies that were not painted, pemitting a thorough visual examination. (All inspections of the Unit I crane were conducted after the modifications were painted). Three of these, attached to the sill beams, have been inspected for weld integ-rity and all had rejectable undercut or material defects. NCR 8833XR-149 documents these findings. Satisfactory closure of the NCR will complete the polar crane inspection since much of the remaining modif-ications have been painted.
In addition to the polar crane, inspection of spray hangers and annulus structural steel connections in the Unit 2 containment building con-tinued through this report period. This has resulted in relatively heavy coverage of this area. Inspections should be re-directed to other areas during the next report period. The inspection log, sorted by item for each unit was generated to assist the NRC project manager in this regard.
A plan _ for conducting an inspection of engineering documents affecting design control related to changes initiated in 'he field was prepared.
The plan will be presented to the licensee by the NRC to facilitate access by the insoectors to the documents and key personnel.
