Dear Mr. Denton:
On January 28, 1984, South Carolina Electric and Gas Company (SCE&G) submitted a proposal to rerack the spent fuel pool at the Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station.
As a result of the review process, a question was raised by the Staff in June 1984 concerning the effect of extended burnup fuel in the postulated fuel handling. accident outlined in Section 15.7.4 of the Standard Review Plan.
This letter is provided in response to this concern.
Westinghouse topical report, " Extended Burnup Evaluation of Westinghouse Fuel," July 1984, WCAP-10125, addresses the impact, including that on the fuel handling accident, of utilizing extended fuel burnups of up to 48,000 MWD /MTU discharge region average.
A plant specific evaluation has been performed based on the conclusions of WCAP-10125 and has indicated the impact of increased fuel burnup in the fuel handling accident is insignificant for the Virgil C.
