Dear Dr. Murley:
POTENTIAL CONSTRUCTION DEFICIENCY BIF BUTTERFLY VALVES IiOPE CREEK GENERATING STATION On August 31, 1984, a verbal report was made to Region I, Office of Inspection and Enforcement representative, Mr. E.
j Kelly, advising of a potentially significant construction deficiency concerning butterfly valves supplied by BIF Industries.
The following interim report is provided in accordance with 10CFR50.55 (e).
Our Architect / Engineer and Constructor, Bechtel, has informed us that a cleanliness inspection of two (2) butterfly valves supplied by BIF Industries revealed extensive corrosion damage to the tapered pins securing the valve stem to the disc.
A review of the BIF fabrication drawing determined that the pins 1
were to be made of Monel (ASME SB 164, C1. B).
Iloweve r, chemical analysis of one of the corroded pins indicates that the material is apparently 400 series stainless steel.
Such a stainless steel would be galvanically dissimilar to the alwninum bronze disc material and susceptible to corrosion.
Bechtel has issued Nonconformance Report No. 3711 to document and control the discrepant hardware.
