i NIAGARA MOHAWK' POWER CORPORATION NINE MILE POINT - UNIT 2 DOCKET NO. 50-410 Find Report for a Problem Concerning Cranes'in the Diesel Generator Rooms (55(e)-84-13)

Description of the Problem This subject concerns three single girder crac which are located in the diesel generator rooms for servicing the correspre ng diesel _ generators.- The runway beams are designed as seismic Category I but the cranes were not seismically qualifled. The problem was identified by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission during Inspection No. 84-01.

In its original parked position, each of the three cranes was designed so that if it had fallen as a result of a seismic event, a crane or crane parts would not impact its corresponding diesel generator. As a result of a design change, the cranes' parked positions were changed. In the new parked  !

position, a crane or its parts could have impacted the diesel generator if it did fall during a seismic event.

Analysis of Safety Implications If a crane or ' its parts would have impacted its corresponding diesel generator, it may have prevented that diesel from performing its design

~ function. Therefore, the safety of operations of the plant could have been adversely affected. As a resul t, the criteria for reportability under 10CFR50.55(e) have been met.

Corrective Actions

, The subject cranes have been seismically analyzed. The changes required by the seismic analysis have been incorporated on the vendor drawing (Stone &

Webster File No. 2.400-018-060C), and the modifications to the cranes will be completed by August 1985.
