Dear Mr O'Reilly:
Carolina Power & Light Company (CP&L) has reviewed IE Bulletin No. 84-02, " Failures of General Electric Type HFA Relays in Use in Class IE Safety Systems" and investigated the use of the subject relays in the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant (SHNPP) safety-related systems.
There are four HFA-51 relays located in the diesel generator control panels. These relays will be replaced prior to fuel load. Carolina Power & Light Company does not plan to use nylon or Lexan-type GE HFA relays in the SHNPP safety-related systems.
In addition to the review of the general concerns expressed in the Bulletin for the other relays used in the SHNPP safety-related systems, CP&L is conducting a review of the concerns expressed in IE Information Notice No. 84-20, " Service Life of Relays in Safety-Related Systems." We will report the results of this investigation and our proposed corrective actions by November 30,1984.
