Ocar Sir:

Subject:

Vermont Yankee Weld Joint Inspection Program By letter dated March 13, 1984 [ Reference b)], we provided you with our

, rogram for inspection of the Recirculation System and other Reactor Coolant p

Boundary Piping Systems during our 1984 refueling outage.

During subsequent conference calls, members of your staff requested additional information regarding our plans for inspecting previously uninspected weld joints.

Spet.ifically, your staff requested that we provide, by pipe size, the number of previously uninspected weld joints which are being inspected during our 1984 refueling outage. These numbers are as follows:

Number of Welds Pipe Size Beir.g Inspected 20" 4

"* U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission July 6, 1984 Pag] 2 VlillMONT YANKist NUCLliAll POW 1?ll COlll'OllATION For each of the pipe sizes, the quantity of welds represents at least a 20 percent sample by pipe size of the total uninspected weld population (minimum of 4 welds), consistent with the criteria of Generic Letter 84-11.

If necessary, the sample will be expanded to include an equivalent quantity of previously uninspected welds in each pipe size found to contain Intergranular Stress Corrosion Cracking.

We also want to inform you that we now intend to inspect all weld overlays which had previous base-metal indications longer than 107,of the circumference, consistent with the requirements of Reference c).

This will expand our overlay inspection program from 12 to 17, and will include the remaining sweepolet-to-riser welds.

In addition, your staff has requested confirmation that we are planning to replace the Reactor Recirculation and Residual Heat Removal System stainless j

steel piping in 1985. This is to reaffirm our intent to accomplish this replace-ment beginning in September 1985.

If you need any further information, please contact us.

Very truly yours, VERMONT YANKEE NUCLEAR POWER CORPORATION
