Subject:

Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station Docket No. 50/395 Operating License No. NPF-12 i

License Condition 2.C.19 Diesel Generator Vibration Dear Mr. Denton

- Operating License Condition 2.C.19 for the Virgil C.

Summer Nuclear Station required further action by South Carolina i -

Electric and Gas Company (SCE&G) to) address Nuclear Regulatory Commission-(NRC) concerns relating to the Emergency Diesel Engine Auxiliary Support Systems.

This License Condition n

I required SCE&G to either qualify the skid-mounted control panels and mounted equipment for operation at the vibrational-stresses encountered during diesel engine operation, or floor 1

- mount the panels and equipment separate from the skid.

Except i

for sensors and other equipment that must be directly mounted

- on the diesel engine or associated piping, the skid-mounted relays and instrumentation will be remounted to meet this License Condition.

This remounting modification includes equipment associated with the emergency start of the engine, l

and equipment which, if it failed, could cause a diesel trip I,

after an emergency start.

j The affected relays will be mounted in a seismically qualified panel on the wall of the room below the diesel generator room.

The solenoid valves and pressure switches will be separated 4

from the skid and mounted on seismically qualified supports on the floor of the diesel generator room.

Pipe and conduit-2 connections to these solenoids and switches will be flexible to prevent transmission of vibration from the skid to the devices.

1 l

This modification is scheduled for completion during the first refueling outage in-September 1984.

Upon completion of this modification, SCE&G will consider that~1t has satisfied License

- Condition 2.C.19 for the Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station.
