Dear Mr. Johnson:
This letter provides an interim report on a potential 10CFR50.55(e) concerning the "B" Standby Diesel Generator left bank turbocharger.
This matter was initially reported by Mr. H.K. Chernoff of Kansas Gas and Electric Company (KGEE) to Mr. Johns Jaudon of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Region IV, on May 4,1984.
During testing of the "B" Standby Diesel Generator (KJ-01-B) front and rear bearings on the left bank turbocharger failed. Inspection and preliminary investigation revealed the possible cause of failure as a loose lock nut on the turbocharger lube oil pump centrifuge.
The standby diesel generator turbochargers were assembled at Wolf Creek Generating Station.
The status of this potential 10CFR50.55(e) will be carried on the
. monthly status update as file 53564-K138. The final report or any significant new information will be submitted by separate correspondence.
