29,600,uci/sec DESCRIPTION OF It was observed on Thursday, March 6,1975, at 0950, during OCCURRENCE:
the monthly surveillance test of the containment spray system that containment spray pump 51A failed to start in the automatic mode when subjected to simulated low-low reactor water Icyc1 and high drywell pressure signals.
It was observed that the " pump failure" alarm initiated approximately 64 seconds after the start signal was applied. An operability check was performed on the redundant System 1 Containment Spray Pump 518.
Containment Spray Pump 51A was then removed from scr. ice for-investigative analysis as to the cause of the failure.

The cause of the occurrence is presently under investigation.
l ANALYSIS OF The only significance associated with the failure of 51A to OCCURRENCE:
start is in a 2oss of system redundancy. Ilad conditions 4
arisen requiring containment spray, pump 51C would have started i
nutomatically and performed the containment heat removal function.
1 4
In addition, the manually initiated backup pump.51B.for System I was checked to be operabic and could have been initiated.
The containment heat removal function can be adequately supplied hv a sinolo conteinnont spray pump.
i CORRECTIVE The failure monitor installed as the result of a similar ACTION:
occurrence on October 21, 1974 functioned during this event nnd the information obtained is under analysis in an effort to i g determine the cause.
