Dear Dr. Murley:

POTENTIAL CONSTRUCTION DEFICIENCY DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE SWITCHES HOPE CREEK GENERATING STATION On April 19, 1984, a verbal report was made to Region I, Office of Inspection and Enforcement representative, Mr.

J.

Linville, advising of a potentially significant construction deficiency concerning differential pressure switches installed on our Emergency Diesel Generators by Colt Industries.

An interim report was submitted to your office on May 18, 1984.

The following information is provided in accordance with 10CFR50.55(e).

Our Architect / Engineer and Constructor, Bechtel, has coordinated with Colt Industries in evaluating the impact of a failure of the fuel oil differential pressure switches on the safe operation of the plant.

It has been determined that the failure of the switch:

-- would not prevent engine startup in the standby mode;

-- would not cause engine shutdown while operating; and

-- would not cause fuel oil to come into contact with surfaces sufficiently hot to ignite and start a fire.

6/29/84 Based on-the above evaluation, we have determined that, had the deficiency gone undetected and uncorrected, it would not have adversely affected safe operation of the plant.

We,

.therefore, withdraw this item as not reportable in accordance with 10CFR50.55(e).

Colt Industries has agreed to provide the materials and procedures necessary to correct this condition on our Diesel Generator sets.

Very truly yours,

/
