Dear Mr. Keupler:

FINAL 10CFR50.55(el/PART 21 REPORP U-70 DIESEL GENERA'IOR KEEPWABM LUBE OIL PUMP

-- CALLAMAY PLANT

. On February 29, 1984 Union Electric infoned the NBC Region III of a significant deficiency reportable under 10CFR50.55(e) regarding the "B" emergency diesel generator keepwarm lube oil purp (PKJ03BJ.

The emergency diesel generators are equipped with a secondary lube oil system which heats and recirculates engine lube oil. This systs keeps the oil warm.to aid starting and'to prelube the bearings until the primary pump proviles sufficient oil flow. The failure of this punp could cmprmise the starting capability and thereby the operation of the emergency diesel generator.

~ The punp is designed with drive gear and idler gear rotors as the pumping .

mechanism. Several teeth on the drive gear failed on one pump each at Callaway and at Wolf Creek. - Frm inspection of the failed parts, the vendor, Crane Deming, has determined that the failures were caused by a misalignment of the rotors due to inproper mounting on the engine skid. The punp is a cmponent of the engine. skid which was ' manufactured by- Colt.

Replacment parts are being obtained and the proper alignment will be checked during installation. In addition, the alignment of the "A" diesel generator keepwarm lube oil punp will be inspected to assure continued operability.

c The replacement part installation and the inspection will be completed prior to fuel load.

We believe the actions taken'and planned have adequately addressed this deficiency and will assure the operability of the diesel generators. This is our final report regarding this matter.
