Reactor Coolant System Power Operated Relief Valve Relays
Dear Mr. Gagliardo:
This letter provides an interim report on a potential 10CFR50.55(e) concerning reactor coolant system power operated relief valve relays.
This matter was initially reported by Mr. H.K. Chernoff of Kansas Gas and Electric Company (KG&E) to Mr. Johns Jaudon of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Region IV, on March 2,1984.
A potential design deficiency has been identified concerning the activating relays (AR3XBB5, AR3XBB6) for the reactor coolant system power operated relief valves (PORVs) at Wolf Creek Generating Station.
The relay contacts, specified in the design do not have sufficient load interrupting capacity for the PORV control circuit. If contact failure should occur during operation, the affected PORV may not reseat properly. The design of these PORV control circuits is currently under evaluation.
The status of this potential 10CFR50.55(e) will be carried on the monthly stetus update as file 53564-K125. The final report or any significant new information will be submitted by separate correspondence.
