Mr. A. Giambusso August 3,1974 Page 2 Description of Occurrence:

During a restart of a reactor recirculation pump, following a reactor scram, the RCIC inverter failure alarm annunciated in the main control room. The inverter was immediately reset.

Designation of Apparent Cause of Occurrence:

The cause of the trippings of the static inverter has not been found.

It is believed that the inverter trips due to a 0.C. bus trans-ient following the start of a large A.C. motor.

Analysis of Occurrence:

The operation of the RCIC system was not necessary at the time of the tripping. The reactor had just scrammed on a turbine trip from high reactor water level. Because of this and the immediate restart of the inverter this occurrence has minimal safety implications.

Corrective Action:

Philadelphia Electric Company, Engineering and Research De-partment, in conjunction with General Electric Company, has designed an input filter network to reduce or climinate the input spikes causing the inverter trippings. The modification is presently in the'last stages of review at General Electric. The modification instructions, with the parts necessary for implementation are expected on site durin~g the first week of September. The modification will be implemented as soon as possible.

l Additionally, the Unit 2 inverters will be modified for auto-l matic trip reset as soon as the parts are available..The Unit 3 in-l verters already have this. feature.
