During the installation of the shroud head and separator assembly at Quad Cities j
Unit 2, two of the lifting rod extensions contacted two of the long upper supports i-that are part of the shroud modification hardware..An initial evaluation was j
performed (Reference _4) demonstrating that no damage of the hardware occurred, i.
A subsequent evaluation was performed (Reference 1) based on utilizing the 3
original design basis finite' element analysis (FEA) of the long upper support (LUS).
j The purpose of this calculation is to verify that the critical stresses calculated -
i based on interpolation of the results from the onginal design' basis analysis are i
representative of the a'ctual support configurabon, during the contact loading i
condition. This calculation also demoristrates that the critical stresses are less
]
than the ASME stress limits, and thus no damage or yielding of the LUS could l
have occurred as a result of the shroud head assembly contact.
l 1
l
- 2. Methodoloav and Acceptance Criteria l
The original design basis analysis (Reference 5) was based on the bounding l-normal / upset loading conditions (P, =711,900 lbs. and P,= 102,500 lbs.) with j
conservative boundary support conditions (see Figure 1). This " revised analysis" l-(Referencesi 2 and 3) is based on the same finite element model (FEM) dith some modifications to simulate the actual conditions associated with the contact loading of the LUS. The specific details of the modeling changes are defined in section 6 i
of this calculation. The acceptance criteria for this calculation are the same limits l
as defined in Reference 1. Also included is a comparison of the critical section stresses from the top contact loading FEA versus the results of the analogous j-original design basis FEA (References 1 and 5). The results shown are based on j
an interpolation of an analysis performed for a Py = 102.5 K!ps. All results have been multiplied by 81.43/102.5 = 0.794 to obtain the equivalent results for an applied load of P = 81.43 Kips (Reference 1, page 13.2).
l 4 Assumptions f
There are no major assumptions that require verification, all key design inputs and assumptions are based on approved references or standard engineering practice.
Minor assumptions related to specific items are noted in the calculation.

- 6. Calculation j
The ' original design basis analysis model included the applied vertical (Y axis) and horizontal (X axis) loads as illustrated in Figure 1. The element restraint conditions for this original model are also illustrated in this figure. The revised 3
analysis model (References 2 & 3) incorporates several changes to represent the specific loading and restraint conditions associated with the actual contact loading condition (see Figure 2). The key differences are that the honzontal seismic loads 2
(X axis) were deleted as they were not present during the contact loading event.
The vertical load was relocated from the bottom of the LUS (original design basis load application point) to the top of the LUS (shroud separator assembly load i
contact point). The nadal restraint changes consisted'of the addition of horizontal (X axis) restraints at the nodes representing the upper contact surface with the shroud (nodes 709,710,711,712,673,674,675,676 see Attachment A). The addition j
of these restraints resulted in a tension / compression form couple (moment resistance) at the nodes in the upper inclined support point (Y axis, nodes 745-748, 729, 733, 734, 735, 693 and 697-699 ) as well as the upper horizontal contact i
surface with the shroud (X axis). Since these supports are actually compression l-only (one directional) restraints any nodes that had a resultant tension were l
released and the analysis was rerun until the final solution (compression reactions l
only) was obtained. The nodes that were released are as follows:
Top Horz. Restraint Surface 693,697,698,699 Outside row i
729,733,734,735 Middle row Top Vert. Restraint Surface 709,710,711,712 Upper row i
in the final analysis case (References 2 and 3) compression was eventually I
obtained in the last row of elements (see Figure 2, nodes 745-748 and 673-676).
l The stresses in the lower section of the LUS were substantially reduced as there was no horizontal seismic load and the stresses at the critical cross section are i
less than what was obtained using the original design basis analysis and loading conditions. Summarized below is a comparison of the element reactions and the critical section stresses for the original condition and the rowsed analysis condition.

- 7. Summary of Results. Conclusions and Recommendations The conclusion of the original evaluation (Reference 4), though based on a simplistic approach remains valid. The methodology, results and conclusions as identified in Reference 1 are a reasonable approximation of the actual condition as the results of this evaluation are very similar to the more refined analysis results presented in this calculation. The maximum stress results as provided in Table 1 for the " Revised FEA Model" are well below the ASME stress limits as well as the yield strength S, = 102,300 psi. Based on these results it can be concluded that no damage of the long upper support would have occurred from the contact loading and therefore the hardware remains adequate to perform its original design function.- See Attachment B for the output listing of the nodal reactions and critical section stresses.
