7-OnOjarch_8, 197.61 a verbal report was made to Region 1, Office of Inspection and Enforcement, advising that following the hot functional test of No. 1 Unit, Salem, dye penetrant testin6 of the stainless steel cladding in the lower head of Ho. 14 Steam Generator revealed linear indications.
This report was in accordance wit.h the provisions of 10CFR50 55(e).
The following is a detailed analysis and report on the subject:
A program of inspection of No. 1 Unit Steam Gene *rators weld metal cladding was initiated by PSE&G as a result of the cladding problems uncovered at Consolidated Edison's Indian Point Unit No. 3 last year.
The program included three phases.
Phase 1 was inspection before field hydrostatic testing, phase 2 was af ter field hydrostatic testing and phase 3 was after hot functional testing.
Inspection results of phase 1 on July 23, 1975 and phase 2 on November 10 and December 12, 1975 did not uncover any linear indications.
The phase 3 initial examination of No. 1h Steam Generator n.s perfora.ed with a solvent dye penetrant (Ma6narlux Spotcheck) by the Site Construct _on HDE personnel.
Indications vere observed in the cold leg side.
Westinghouse, Tampa Division, was requested to provide its representative to conduct and com the examinat. ion with the same techniques and procedures a s 'ple tehad been previously used at Indian Point No. 3.
Presence of linear indies.tions was confirmed on April 7, 1976 by the Westinchouse inspector and the water washable technique.

Dye penetrant testing on April 8, 1976 of the cold leg side of 110. 12 Steam Generator encompanning 180 around the upper portion of the channel head approximately 2 ft. wide did not disclece any linear indications.
Addi tional innpection of the name relative area in the cold leg side of Ilo. 14 Steam Generator uncovered additional indications.
Performance of the containment structural integrity te st delay ed any further inspection.
A 100% dye penetrant examination of the cladding on the channel heads, reheduled to be completed on all four steam generators after conpletion of the containment struc-trual integrity test is in progress.
Completion of inspection and evaluation of results are expected by May 28, 1976.
The results of the present inspection program are available at the. cite for your future inspectionr.
