Docket No. STN 50-482 Subj: Potential 10CFR50.55(e) Interim Report -

Containment Spray Pump Room Flooding

Dear Mr. Johnson:

This letter provides an interim report on a potential 10CFR50.55(e) concerning flooding of the containment spray pump room at Wolf Creek Generating Station. This matter was initially reported to Mr. William Johnson of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Region IV, by Mr. O.L.

Maynard of Kansas Gas and Electric Company (KG&E) on March 27, 1984.

Due to a weather-related transmission system failure, all temporary construction power to the Power Block was lost. As a result of this loss of temporary construction power, electric driven sump pumps located in the auxiliary building ceased operation. This event in combination with piping flushing operations being performed in the Auxiliary Building resulted in an accumulation of water in the containment spray pump room.

Flooding was mitigated through the use of gasoline generators to power the deenergized sump pumps.

Although power was restored and the accumulated water removed from the room, some equipment had been submerged. Submerged equipment included junction boxes and transmitters for safety-related equipment as well as non-safety-related items such as lights, electrical outlets, headset jacks and card readers. All potentially damaged equipment will be tested and repaired or replaced as deened necessary. KG&E is curre7tly evaluating corrective actions needed to prevent any recurrence.

The status of this potential 10CFR50.55(e) will be carried on the monthly status update as file 53564-K133. The final report or any significant information will be submitted by separate correspondence. In the interim, please direct any questions concerning this subject to me or to Mr. Otto Maynard of my staff.
