Dear Sir:

Subject:

Docket No. 50-362 March 20, 1984, Immediate Notification San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, Unit 3 In accordance with 10 CFR 50.36 and 50.72(b)(2)(vi), an immediate notification was made at approximately 1335 on March 20, 1984.

That notification reported that a precautionary evacuation of a fire watch in Room 209 of the Fuel Handling Building was performed due to a rising concentration of noble gases.

Further evaluation of this matter has led to the conclusion that the notification was not required since an hourly, rather than continuous, fire watch was required and the fire watch was only suspended for 50 minutes.

The shift and staff personnel responsible for making immediate notifications to the NRC have been instructed to err on the conservative side and make a notification, even if there may be some doubt as to the applicability of 10 CFR 50.72 or the validity of the initial information.

In this case, such notification was made and subsequently determined to be unnecessary.

Consequently, in accordance with NUREG-1022, no 10 CFR 50.73, " Licensee Event Report System," report will be made.

If you have any questions or comments regarding this event, please so advise.

Sincere y,

- /t M/g cc:
