Interim Report for a Problem Concerning Cranes in the Diesel Generator Rooms

! Description of the Problem

The subject single girder cranes are located in 'the diesel ge'nerator rooms for servicing the diesel generators. The runway beams are designed as seismic Category I but the cranes are not seismically qualified. i j In its original parked position, the crane was designed such that if it had fallen as a result of seismic event, the crane or crane parts would not impact

- on the diesel generators. This design was in accordance with Regulatory Guide

_ 1.29 Rev. 3, Paragraph 2.

As the result of a design change in the parked position of the crane, the crane, or crane parts, could impact on the diesel generators if it would fall 4 durin. a seismic event.

This matter is still under investigation. A final report will be submitted by October 15, 1984.
