Docket 50-219 I -

Oyster Creek Station

, Trip of Diese4 Generator No. 1 j- . The purpose of this letter is to report to you a trip of I

diesel generator no. 1 that occurred during surveillance testing at Oyster Creek Station.

On June 26, 1972, a routine one-hour surveillance test of

[.

4 diesel generator no. I was being conducted when, a normal shutdown sequence of the geierator was initiated. The unit had been loaded at 1875 KW for approximately five minutes prior to the shutdown.

Prior to the shutdown, the unit trouble alarm was annunciated and-the operator, stationed locally at the diesel generator, checked the cause of the trouble alarm and determined Tit to be excescive engine cooling water temperature. The cause.

of the high engine coolant temperature was determined to be 'the prevented the 'shuit'ers (or radiator louvers) 'from ' As opening.-resultofadeic [

a v result, the engiEe ' water temperature switch (ETS) closed at an /

approximate coolant temperature of 200 F and initiated a' normal engine' shutdown. /

The engine coolant system was drained to -permit removal of the TA switch. .Upon removal of the. switch, it was found that the gas bulb had lost its charge; thus, s_ replacement switch was ./

needed. The manufacturer's representative was contacted . to obtain' a replacement switch and daily surveillance testing of diesel generator no. 2 was started as,re. quired by the Technical
