Dear Mr. Keppler:

On October 31, 1983, the Commonwealth Edison Company Project Management Department notified Mr. D.

W.

Hayes of your office of a deficiency reportable ~ pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55(e) regarding the cracked Gould Battery cells at our Braidwood Station.

For your tracking purposes, this deficiency was assigned Number 83-14.

This letter fulfills ~the thirty (30) day reporting requirements of 10 CFR 50.55(e) regarding this matter and'is considered to be a final report.

DESCRIPTION OF DEFICIENCY Ouring an inspection of the Braidwood Unit 1 safety-related battery.. installation, cracks were discovered in three (3) of the Gould Battery cells.

GNB Batteries Incorporated visually inspected all cells and determined that cell numbers 18, 52 and 53 were cracked.

The cause of the cracking is not known at this time.

However, GNB Batteries is expected to provide CECO. with an analysis of the cause of the. cracking..

' ANALYSIS-OF SAFETY IMPLICATIONS If this deficiency were to be left uncorrected, the crack in the cells could result in possible leakage resulting in a battery failure, and subsequent loss of their intended function.
