'LER 50-321/1979-021, REV. 5 EDWIN I. HATCH NUCLEAR PLANT - HATCH 1 NONROUTINE RADIOLOGICAL ENVIRONMENTAL OPERATING ANOMALOUS MEASUREMENT REPORT

~ SThis i r_eport uihichl supplements ' the previous submittals on LER 50-321/1979-021 iprovides updated data on tritium levels in groundwater samples.taken from flocationsTwhere the average value.during the third quarter of 1983 exceeded

' 3 O.

E4. --pCi/11 which iis :. the = report level for tritium in environmental ' water se:mples according to Table.33.2-3 of the ETS.

There continues to be 'no

'significant11mpact~ on the: public health.and safety due to these readings which

-exceededL the report ' level.

As reported previously, any releases to.

tunrostricted. areas _ are _through the outfalls of the drainage. system;. such

.rsicases / continue ! to be small. ~ and ' result in nonsignificant doses to the lpublic.'

Roportable levels were lfound o'nly at test holes N9B and T3 which are adjacent-to ' each ' other.

Reportable' levels have continuously occurred-at-N9B for over four; years.

'The: tritium' levels at T3 were.. reportable for a few years but then dropped below:the-report level for.a few! quarters.

..Th1i ftritium. levels.found during the ~ third quarter at N9B and T3 are presented inLTable 1.

.It-.is seen that-the levels at N98Lare steadily decreasing-.while those' at T3 Jare increasing.

The quarterly average levels were 1.85 ES and 3383-E4"pCi/1 at-N98 and T3, respectively.

Dur.ing the '_ second quarter of 1983, reportable. levels were also'found at test hole T18.

>This test' hole was.found to be dry in each attempt to obtain samples _du' ring the third q'uarter.

Thai-Center of Applied ' Isotope' Studies. of the University of Georgia who p3rforms the tritiumE analyses of the groundwater samples has determined that

-thnirM results ' have' been in ' error-due to their failure to account for decay of the tritium standard.

The results obtained in July were approximately 36% too

.high; the' error.' increases about 1/2%:per month.

' -LThs ; results reported. herein-have.-_ been - corrected.

Results reported previously h2Vo accordingly. been _ too high.

Corrective action has been taken by the Conter fort Applied Isotope Studies, such that, accurate results are now being

-cbtained.
