Dear Mr. Keppler:

On June 17, 1983, the Commonwealth Edison Company Project Engineering Department notified Mr. Julian M. Hinds of your office of a deficiency reportable pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55(e) regarding the Elcen Metal Products spring hangers at our Byron and Braidwood Stations. For your tracking purposes, this deficiency was assigned Number 83-08 for Byron Station and Number 83-06 for Braidwood Station. Reference (a) provided our thirty (30) day report concerning this deficiency and indicated our expectations for submittal of the final report within ninety (90) days. The purpose of this letter is to provide a status update.

As stated in Reference (a), fourteen (14) hangers at each site have been identified as having nuts with a carbon content in excess of the applicable ASME Section III limit (greater than-0.35%). Replacement ~ springs.have since been ordered to replace the affected hangers ~1n order to correct this deficiency. However, at this time, replacement parts have not yet been delivered.

Concerning the evaluation of the spring hangers with a carbon content below 0.35%, IMPELL is currently providing an evaluation of these hangers to ASME B&PV Code,Section III, ,

actions will be documented in a later report now expected to be- I submitted on or about January 15, 1984.  !
