Dear Mr. Gagliardo:
This letter provides an interim report submitted pursuant to 10CFR50.55(e) concerning exposed threads on threaded pipe joints with seal welds at Wolf Creek Generating Station. This matter was initially reported by Messrs. Earl Creel and Otto Maynard of Kansas Gas and Electric Company (KG&E) to Mr. Johns Jaudon of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Region IV, on October 12, 1983.
ASME III, NC-4428 requires that exposed threads be removed or covered with weld material where seal welding of threaded pipe joints is performed.
Contrary to this requirement, two seal welded ASME Section IV Class 2 threaded pipe connections were identified in which some of the threads were lef t exposed. These connections have been documented on a noncon-formance report and will be reworked.
In addition, the Constructor's procedures have been revised to specifically include this ASMS requirement.
A preliminary evaluation of other seal welded threaded connections indicates that these two connections represent an isolated case. However, the evaluation of this concern has not been concluded. The status of this evaluation will be reported to you on or before January 13, 1984. In the interim, please direct any questions concerning this subject to me or to Mr. Otto Maynard of my staff.
